2010 - "The Macro-Stability of Swiss WIR-Bank Spending: Balance and Leverage Effects"

James Stodder, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford, CT, USA;  28 Page report. Since 1934 the Swiss Wirtschaftsring (“Economic Circle”) or WIR-Bank, has issued its own currency. This WIR-money is used in a highly counter-cyclical fashion: firms are cash-short in a recession, and economize by greater use of WIR.

 

2009 - "Complementary Credit Networks and Macro-Economic Stability: Switzerland’s Wirtschaftsring"

James Stodder, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford, CT, USA. June 5, 2009 - Appearing in Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 72, October, 2009, pp. 79–95.  This paper emphasizes that, as the WIR solves exchange problem with virtual money, it also helps stabilize the economy by providing firms in the cooperative with more ability to trade in down economic times that they would otherwise possess. 

 

2000 - "RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE NETWORKS: IMPLICATIONS FOR MACROECONOMIC STABILITY"

James Stodder an economics professor at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute at Hartford a 15-page report on  "Barter rings" in the US and Switzerland do billions of dollars of trade each year. Their turnover is seen to be counter-cyclical. Most studies of the internet's macroeconomic impact focus on the stabilizing effect of greater price and inventory flexibility. The pre-internet experience of these systems, however, suggests that, for networks independent of direct monetary exchange, expanded credit availability may be even more stabilizing.

 

2000 - Research Paper by Dr. James Stodder Reviewed in WirPlus Magazine

A research paper by Dr. James P. Stodder, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Lally School of Management & Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford, was reviewed for an article that appeared in both the French and German editions of the October 2000 issue of WirPlus, the monthly magazine of the WIR Bank based in Switzerland. Dr. Stodder has provided background information about his research paper, WIR Bank, the article and its author, and an English translation of the full text of the article.

"Dual-Currency Transactions"

In the WIR and ATS operations buying and selling transactions are done using a combination of the national currency (cash) and the Trade Systems' private currency (trade credits). This provides important advantages both when acquiring and when selling products and services.
