2010 - " The
Macro-Stability of Swiss WIR-Bank Spending:
Balance and Leverage Effects"
James Stodder, Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, Hartford, CT, USA;
28 Page report. Since 1934 the Swiss
Wirtschaftsring (“Economic Circle”) or WIR-Bank,
has issued its own
currency. This WIR-money is used in a highly
counter-cyclical fashion: firms are cash-short
in a recession, and
economize by greater use of WIR.
2009 -
"Complementary
Credit Networks and Macro-Economic Stability: Switzerland’s
Wirtschaftsring"
James Stodder,
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
Hartford, CT, USA. June 5, 2009 - Appearing in
Journal
of Economic Behavior & Organization,
72, October, 2009, pp. 79–95.
This
paper emphasizes that, as the WIR solves exchange problem
with virtual money, it also helps stabilize the economy by
providing firms in the cooperative with more ability to
trade in down economic times that they would otherwise
possess.
2000 -
"RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE
NETWORKS: IMPLICATIONS FOR MACROECONOMIC STABILITY"
James Stodder
an
economics professor at Rensselear Polytechnic
Institute at Hartford a 15-page report on
"Barter rings" in the US and Switzerland do
billions of dollars of trade each year. Their
turnover is seen to be counter-cyclical. Most
studies of the internet's macroeconomic impact
focus on the stabilizing effect of greater price
and inventory flexibility. The pre-internet
experience of these systems, however, suggests
that, for networks independent of direct
monetary exchange, expanded credit availability
may be even more stabilizing.

"Dual-Currency
Transactions"
In the WIR and ATS operations buying and
selling transactions are done using a
combination of the national currency
(cash) and the Trade Systems' private
currency (trade credits). This
provides important advantages both when
acquiring and when selling products and
services. |
